Connecting with Workers

The type of relationship you have with your worker is important. If it is a good working relationship, both you and your worker will feel respected. This is called mutual respect, and it is the foundation for a strong working relationship.

Mutual Respect

Think of a time when you were in a relationship with someone when you felt mutual respect. How would you describe that experience? What were your feelings, responses, or behaviors that made it feel mutually respectful?

You know there is mutual respect in a relationship when:

  • Everyone feels valued for who they are and what they bring to the table,
  • You can agree to disagree without holding a grudge, and
  • You can see and value the other person’s strengths

Communication Skills

The ways we communicate with each other are important. When we communicate well, we are more likely to build (and maintain!) good relationships.

  • Communication skills are important when we are with family and friends
  • These skills are also important in your relationships with your workers

Defining Expectations

  • Your worker needs to know what you expect of them
  • For that to happen, you will need to define what your expectations are

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

Knowing some common pitfalls that get in the way of mutual respect can be helpful. If you notice any of these things happening, pay attention! Deal with them and head them off as soon as you can. That way, they don’t become larger problems.
